The bull of St Luke

THE GOSPEL OF LUKE

Jesus and the Temple: Lk 19,41-48

Where is Jesus in verses 41 and 45? This of course divides these verses into two sections. We will need to see how they are connected.

Comparing these verses to Mark 11,11-25, what has Luke added and what has Luke left out (but see 13,6-9)

For verses 41-44, have a look back to 13,34-35.

Weeping as a gesture has OT roots. See for example Nehemiah 1,4 or Lamentations 1,2.

How is Luke in verse 42 picking up his response to the Pharisees in verses 39-40?

See how verse 43 echoes Is 29,3. How are the Pharisees repeating their forebears mistakes?

Jesus speaks of the time of visitation in verse 44: note how that reflects 1,68.

In verse 45, Jesus enters into the Temple, as in Malachi 3,2. For its significance, we can recall when Jesus last entered the Temple, 2,49.

In verse 46, Luke is quoting Isaiah 56,7 but see what he has left out from Mark 11,17.

For verses 47 and 48, compare 21,37-38. Recall what we noted in the overview about what happens in between.
Then note how 19,47-48 sets the scene for the confrontations that will follow in the next chapter. Look at the question in 20,2 and then consider what 19,48 tells us about Jesus.

Then look at my response.

Onwards now to the next chapter, with our overview of chapter 20.
