The bull of St Luke

THE GOSPEL OF LUKE

The Light of the Body: 11,29-36

Luke now provides a bridge passage joining the two main presentations of the chapter. We've seen 11,1-28, now take a look at 11,37-54. It's theme will be evident. Then read these verses and see the unity between the two parts.

The emphasis on the size of the crowd in 11,29 marks a new development. Yet, as we have seen, Jesus is now responding to those who were seeking a sign in verse 16.

How is Luke's sign of Jonah (11,29) different to Matthew's (Mt 12,39-40)? What is Luke's message? Look at the story of Jonah, especially chapter 3.

For the wisdom of Solomon, see 1 Kings 10,1-10 - and consider 11,28 which we have just read.

Luke then returns to the lamp image in 8,16. Consider what is different about its use here. How does the comments about light and darkness reflect Jesus' words about a sign?

Now look at my response.

We are now ready move on to Jesus' warnings to the Pharisees, 11,37-54.
