THE GOSPEL OF MARK

FASTING AND THE BRIDEGROOM: 2,18-22

We can begin by reading the episode and noting how it unfolds. How is the episode set up in verse 18? What follows in verses 19-22?

What is the traditional purpose of fasting? Look at, for example, Jonah 3, Joel 2,11-17.

How does Jesus' reply move from the general to the specifc in verses 19 and 20? How does he express his response in verse 19? How is it expressed in the NRSV?

It is good to look at the words of Jesus by exploring a little further the theme of the Bridegroom. It is theme which runs through the Bible, both Old and New Testaments. There is a remarkable story in the prophecy of Hosea, chapters 1 and 2, which shows the covenant in terms of marriage. Look also at Isaiah 54,4-8 and Ezekiel 16,7-34. For the New Testament, take a look at 2 Cor 11,2, Ephesians 5,22-23 and Apoc 21,2.9.

Verses 21 and 22 give two sayings of Jesus about new and old. Try to tease out the meaning and implications of what Jesus is saying. How do they develop the message of Jesus in verse 20?

What therefore might be the special significance of this episode as the centre of the five scenes?

The Sunday Gospel

This third episode (Mk 2,18-22) is the Gospel for 8th Sunday of Ordinary Time.

The Old Testament reading is Hosea 2,16-22. As usual, comment on this choice in light of the Gospel; I have suggested already that you read chapters 1 & 2 of the prophecy of Hosea. Which verses are clearly applicable to the Gospel? Note as well the explicit language used in the story.

We can move on to the fourth episode, the final part of this chapter.
