The bull of St Luke

The Gospel of Luke

Chapter 7: Overview

In 7,1 we are told that Jesus finishes the Sermon on the Plain and moves to Capernaum.
At the ened, n 8,1-3 we find a summary of Jesus' companions. 7,1 and 8,1 therefore give us the boundaries for the chapter as a whole.

The chapter begins in 7,1-3 with Jesus going to Capernaum and meeting the centurion's messengers. By 7,10 we are being told that the servant is in good health.

Then in 7,11, Jesus goes to Nain. This is linked to the preceeding episode by the phrase "soon aferwards". The raising of the widow's son concludes in 7,17 with reports of Jesus spreading everywhere.

In 7,18-19, we are told that John the Baptist sends two of his disciples to Jesus.
There is a follow up from 7,24 when Jesus speaks to the crowds about John.

A change of subject comes in 7,36 with the Pharisee inviting Jesus to the dinner and the woman then coming to anoint Jesus. This concludes the chapter.

Reading Plan

From this exploration, we can draw up our reading plan for the chapter.
Although the episodes of the centurion (7,1-10) and the widow (7,11-17) form a pair as we have seen, it is as well to read them on separate pages because they are read on successive Sundays. This gives us the following pages for our reading:
