The bull of St Luke

THE GOSPEL OF LUKE

THE LEAVEN OF THE PHARISEES: Lk 12,1-12

Notice how Luke refers to the crowd in 11,29 and 12,1.

The first verse is unique to Luke except for one phrase. Look at Mark 8,15 to see how Luke has made the point explicit. Take a look also at 12,56 and 13,15, though we will be reading those verses shortly.

To whom are warnings given in verses 2 and 3?

Luke has used light and darkness before: look at 8,17 & 11,35.

In verse 4, see how Jesus addresses the disciples in a manner unique in the Synoptics (see John 15,15).

What is "fear" in verses 4 & 5? Note the contrast between 12,4-5 and 12,6-7 (see Proverbs 1,7, which we will see again in 12,20)

For sparrows in verse 6, see also 12,24.

For verses 8 and 9, look at Mt 10,32-33 to see Luke's choice of words.

Verses 10 to 12 need to be read together: how does the Holy Spirit in verse 12 indicate the meaning of the Holy Spirit in verse 10? These matters come up several times in the Gospels, usually towards the end. Look for example at Lk 22,12.

Then look at my response.

At this point, someone in the crowd intervenes and we move on to the next stage of Jesus' speech, 12,13-34.
